Women Ask Wednesday: What’s your favorite (non-book) item to recommend to pregnant women?

Oh you guys! I’m embarrassed I didn’t even know about this little gem of a product until AFTER my second baby (in all fairness, the company was only started in 2018). I was walking about the unit of the postpartum unit after my son was born and ran into our lactation consultant. She said congratulations and asked how nursing was going. Then she asked me….”Do you have a haakaa?” I said: “A what?!” She wrote the name on a piece of paper for me and I went back to my labor room, looked it up online, and ordered it immediately.

Please let me introduce you to the haakaa! Usually you can get them for about $12-15. And man, are they worth every penny. I’m such a fan of these, I give include them in baby shower gifts (especially if they aren’t on someone’s registry).

The silicone forms a natural suction to your breast. The haakaa is generally used on the side that you aren’t nursing to collect the let-down but can be used in a variety of ways. I even packed it on a few outings where I didn’t want to take my pump and manually expressed milk using the haakaa without any issue.

With my son, I used this while he was a newborn (up to about 3-4 months), and I put over 100 ounces of breastmilk in the freezer without every touching my breast pump. It was amazing. And it’s just so easy. I won’t post pictures of me using this product….but I used to send my husband text messages of the 3 ounces I would collect during a nursing session while he was at work. He never really knew what to say other than to send me back a thumbs up. Needless to say, I was immensely proud every time.

You can also check out the New Zealand’s company official website here. The company makes a lot of other baby products I didn’t even know about (I always feel like the baby market moves faster than I can keep up with). If you have used some of their other products, let me know! I’m particularly interested in the cap for the haakaa as I may have knocked mine over more than once.

What’s your favorite thing to give for a baby shower or to recommend to a pregnant mama? Let me know! Happy hump day!
