The following resource list is merely that: a recommended list of resources for pregnancy, breastfeeding, parenting and beyond for individuals or providers. These are the resources I tell my patients and colleagues about on a daily basis. This list has been a decade in the making and was created through many years of nursing school. Eating Fish During Pregnancy (FDA, 2021)
- A free database to view clinical guidelines (you do have to make an account, but again… it’s FREE!)
Epidural
- Modern Labor Epidural Analgesia: Implications For Labor Outcomes and Maternal-Fetal Health (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology) | A really nice overview on evidence for epidurals in labor. The main points are this: epidurals are not associated with higher rates of cesarean birth and don’t increase labor or pushing time substantially (about 15 extra minutes during the first stage of labor and about 30 minutes during second stage/pushing); APGAR scores are similar to babies born to mothers with or without epidurals; and the common side effects of epidurals are a drop in blood pressure and higher likelihood of fever – both of which are not associated with known adverse affects.

Pregnancy Education
- April 2024: Experienced disrespect & abuse during childbirth and associated birth characteristics: a cross-sectional survey in the Netherlands | BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth: 11,520 women were included in the study; 45% of primiparous and 27% of multiparous women report at least one episode of disrespect or abuse during their labor or birth. Lack of consent was reported most frequently followed by communication issues. Things that upset women the most? Transfer from midwife to OB care, transfer to the hospital for birth, unplanned cesarean or operative birth. How do we improve? Be aware/improve our non-verbal and verbal communication; encourage support in labor (doulas!) and shared decision-making for each decision point or procedure.
