Midwife Musings on Trends in Obstetric Practice During the COVID -19 Pandemic

Hello hello! It was a quiet week on the blog last week. I did two weeks in a row of clinic to spin up for the new job and I didn’t have any brain power leftover. But, I did run into a lot of frustrations related to the pandemic that I thought it would be…

Do you know how you should wear your seatbelt in the car when you have a bump?!
New blog post is up today!
World Breastfeeding Week is meant to remind us that we all have a role in protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding. This year's theme is aimed at education and support for breastfeeding. My experience is that mamas and families don't get enough of either. Here are some great resources to recommend or share for anyone needing education or support on their breastfeeding journey:
Tip #19🤰For mamas: Use Epsom Salts!
💪 For midwives!
Are you thinking about midwifery as a career? Are you in midwifery school?
Guess what got updated this week?! The contraception and family planning tool! I’ve been meaning to update a few things for a while.
Three tips to increase breastfeeding while in the hospital:
California! The state that the most births occur in every year. Midwives attend about 10% of those births...
I had my anatomy scan this week!! It’s a boy 💙💙💙! Don’t you love seeing little baby feet and hands?!
Tip #18 for mamas: Put all those clothes that don't fit during pregnancy or postpartum in a basket and stick it in the back of your closet! This will save you so much frustration, angst and longing (hello favorite j crew shorts, I'm thinking of you!). And...it will make it easier to get dressed! Feel free to add to the pile as your bump grows during pregnancy or slowly returns to post-pregnancy norms after baby.
Do you subscribe to newsletters?! Truth: I am quick to unsubscribe if you waste my time or don't offer good content. Enter these gems - when they show up in my inbox, I read them! Each offers it's own specific content based on what I'm looking for - so I figured I'd share what regularly comes into my inbox that I think continues to provide value.
I’m totally wiped out after 2 days of everything postpartum support international. I learned about some great initiatives across the nation, some policies in the works to heals maternal health and became all sorts of inspired at some extraordinary people doing some really exciting things. My mama flew in for a surprise trip to see me and I got to bunk with a good friend from my DNP program (Tina!!! 😘). I’ll post this next week about all the things I learned and new resources I have to share. And New Orleans: your food was so great!!!! And yes, the last picture is the mama and I staring at a closed yarn store (arts n crafts lovers for life!) Check out some of these great IG accounts and get inspired! @naturesplayhouse
Headed to conference! First one in a loooonng time. Advance thanks to hubby and nanny for holding down the fort while mama is away. Tell me your must gos in New Orleans - I’ve never been!!! And I’ll editing templates - if you use ‘em tell me what you love and what you need added! #psicon2022
Tip #18 💪 For midwives: Buy back some time.
It's true! We are planning a home birth for baby #4 after THREE hospital births and I am so excited. The blog post goes into why the hubs and I decided to go that way...and why I think it'll be the best birth yet (God willing!). Who's had a home birth after a hospital birth? Any advice? Tell me all the things! I'm equally nervous and excited.
Happy 4th! So thankful for this country and the freedoms we have everyday. We spent the weekend with family and the beach…and these shenanigans! 🇺🇸♥️ Behind all the midwifing fun, I’m just a mama of these three first and foremost! #mama #fourthofjuly
State spotlight: ARKANSAS!
🤰For mamas: Decline those stirrups!
Tip #17 for midwives!!! 💪: Be the calmest person in the room during birth and emergencies. It’s easier said than done. Your hands are trying to figure out when the constant flow of blood is coming from… the baby’s shoulders are stuck and you’re the one trying to figure them out…you get a page in the middle of the night because a mama got bit by a tick and now wonders what her chances of Lyme disease are… all normal days on the battlefield of midwifery. But most important, is how you take a deep breath, steady yourself, and keep your voice calm as you identify what’s wrong, how to fix it, what kind of help you need and then talk to your team and mama. These help me: I’ve found keeping your voice calm keeps everyone calmer (i.e. no shouting). Closed loop communication never fails. And calling for help as soon as you identify you need it (whether you need the peds team ASAP or your back in house for a placental abruption). Although midwifery can make you feel like a lonesome ranger some days, it’s a team sport. Next time your feel the butterflies or anxiety build, take a breath, stay calm, call for help and get to work. 🏃‍♀️💨 #steadydoesit #amidwifenation
